actually you are right that there are options related to IM windows in Options. Details follow.
The View menu option, called Split Window View or Single Window View, determines whether chats appear in separate windows or in the main Skype window. In Options > IM Settings after you press the Advanced button, there are a few options related to chat message appearance: First, there's the one called "Open a new window when I receive a new message in Split Window View." That does not decide whether chats appear separately, but rather decides whether a message coming in can open its own window versus just flagging in the Conversations list as a conversation with new content. This box defaults to Checked, and I imagine most users of split-window view (formerly called Compact view) will like that. After the Show Basic Options button, we have a checkbox about images in chats, a link, then a confusingly named "Compact Chat View" checkbox. This is NOT a duplicate of the View menu's Split/Single Window View option according to my tests. I assume it changes the format of a chat window, but I don't think it changes where chats themselves appear. Hope this helps.
