Vamos organizar isso...o mouse que n�o funciona � o PS/2 ? Se sim, ent�o estava usando o protocolo PS/2 no /etc/X11/xf86config ?
Se o seu mouse for com scroll-wheel (rodrinha) use a configura��o abaixo:

Section "InputDevice"

# Identifier and driver

    Identifier  "Mouse1"
    Driver      "mouse"
    Option "Protocol"    "IMPS/2"
    Option "Device"      "/dev/mouse"
    Option "ZAxisMapping"      "4 5"

Mande mais informa��es....e o gpm � para o mouse funcionar fora do X, ou seja, no console....
