Add this to the ./configure arguments --without-libtool \ and/or try it again without CC in the environment. (There have been reports on the gdal mailing list where setting CC/CXX in the environment causes gdal's configure to use libtool, leading to python-related build failures. Both steps in that chain of causality are bizarre and unwelcome; let's hope the workround works.)
