Thanks for looking at this Chris. I have managed to get VTK to build
now.
My solution was to uninstall the existing (older) version of VTK
before creating the newer package. If someone wants to confirm this
as a repeatable solution then it may be worth adding a comment to
that effect to the readme.
regards, Tim
Thanks for finding that Tim.
I was able to replicate the problem in a VM with previous VTK
installed. I've also posted to LQ requesting your solution be tried.
If it works, as seems probable, I'll add it to the README.

Hi,
I use current as default OS, so some days ago I first posted the
question in the Ponce's thread in LQ about the same error, that occurred
enabling all optional features (IMAGING, MPI, VIEWS, ecc.). I temporary
"solved" disabling MPI. This happened always trying to build the new
version with previous VTK 9.0.3 installed
Following the suggestion given by Chris, today I rebuilt VTK with all
features enabled after uninstalling the previous version and I confirm
that the build ends successfully. At this point it appears obvious that
extended settings require the removal of previous installation.
Thanks for these reports!
greetings
gian
