Hi Slackers

Venturing forth into unknown territories I bravely upgraded Slackware 10.1 via slapt-get. However, upon rebooting I obtain an X11 error and this prevents gdm from loading. I have gone through the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and cannot see anything particularly wrong with the set up.
The /var/log/Xorg.0.log notes:
(WW) that it cannot "open module speedo" followed by an error (EE) to the same effect (module does not exist, 0)
(WW) "couldn't open keyboard" and error (EE) failed to load module keyboard (module does not exist, 0)
(WW) VESA(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (repeated four times with a set of of hex numbers)
(EE) No Input driver matching 'Keyboard'

Fatal server error: failed to initialize core devices

The problem is quite evident, but the solution is not.

My question(s):
short-term - any ideas on how to fix this. The config file seems to be accurate, although plainly X11 session manager borks at it
longer-term - any ideas on how to prevent this on future upgrades?

Ideas, theories, and flights of fancy are welcomed :)

Cheers
/j
