Using Memory Errors to Attack a Virtual Machine
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/14/214257

gillus writes "A very cool [0]scientific paper from Appel and
Govindavajhala that explains how virtual machines like java or .Net can
be exploited. How? Quite simple, bomb your DRAM chip with X-rays... or
more simply with 50-watt spotlight, as the authors [1]demonstrate.
    Definitively worth a read!"

Smart Gun with Minicam and Biometric Access
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/14/1818231

StrawberryFrog writes "Ya well no fine, those crazy South Africans are
at it again, this time with a "[0]intelligent firearm". You may have
heard of guns with fingerprint recognition before, but this also uses a
laser to ignite the propellant, has multiple barrels and incorporates a
minicam to record as evidence what you are shooting at. It's a very
different gun design, and one that depends on electronics to make it
    work."

Problems in Computer Conservation
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/14/1315248

sobachatina writes "The [0]Computer museum at [1]The University of
Amsterdam has [2]an interesting page with examples of the problems that
they run into maintaining 20+ year old hardware such as rubber rollers
from card readers melting or mold growing inside CRT terminals.I hate
it when I get mold growing inside my monitor!"

Making a House That Will Last for Centuries?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/14/0554217

tcyun asks: "The intro text from kaisyain's [0]review brought up a
thought that has been floating around in my head as I am a new
home-owner. If one wanted to design a home that would last for hundreds
of years, what would one have to do? I, and many of my friends, have
recently/ purchased homes. As with all homes, some things are in good
shape, others are not. Many items are the fault of initial design, many
are due to poor upkeep and repairs. Looking around, it is possible to
have a home last for hundreds of years (my family's ancestral home is
about 400 years old and there are [1]castles in [2]Europe that are
older). If one wanted to build/modify a home, what would one need to do
to make sure that the home would still be standing, and usable,
hundreds of years from now?" [3]M: Wired suggests [4]going underground.

Build Your Own Satellite Ground Station
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/14/1814247

kavachameleon writes "A site called Hobby Space has this article at
which there are instructions on how you can [0]build your own satellite
weather station! Something I think all of us have wanted to do at one
point or another, this site tells us all how to "hack" into the weather
satellites and get back usable pictures using our PCs and an AM
antenna. There are more instructions for getting geostationary images."

First Test of Utah Anti-Spam Law Dismissed
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/14/174204

[0]fwoomer writes "Apparently, Utah feels that once you've 'opted-in'
you [1]can't opt back out as fast as you've opted in. From the story:
'Gillman requested removal on May 14, 2002, from the e-mailing lists
his visit to Audio Galaxy a month earlier had linked him to. Two days
later, he received a Sprint ad, and on May 28 he filed suit. The court
found his attempt to have himself removed from the lists was
insufficient to void the pre-existing business relationship.' If he was
receiving spam in May after 'opting in' in April, I don't see how it
could be unreasonable to expect to be removed from lists as fast as he
was added. Unfortunately there's not much detail in this story. A good
read, nonetheless." I don't see how signing up with Audiogalaxy
establishes a business relationship with Sprint, but, whatever.
Presumably some of the [2]other lawsuits filed are against people that
have no possible claim to the receiver opting-in.

U.S. Jobs Jumping Ship
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/14/1355257

An anonymous reader writes "As painful as February's big job cuts were,
they're even more painful since many of those jobs are never coming
back as U.S. employers in a wide range of industries move more and more
jobs overseas. [0]CNN has the story." Salon has a good piece detailing
how [1]job requirements are changing, asking more and more for less and
    less pay.

OpenBSD: Hackers Meet Soldiers
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/14/1459221

[0]BSDForums writes "OpenBSD has a well-deserved reputation for
fanatical security. Why is the U.S. military funding it? What do you
get out of it? [1]Cameron Laird and George Peter Staplin investigate
and talk to Theo de Raadt, the creator, overseer, and taskmaster of the
