Wired's Wish List For 2013
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/17/0416251

[0]jpt.d writes "Wired has a nice [1]article on what they wish to be
for 2013. It is not too far fetched either! My personal favorite is the
roll up television screen made of light-emitting-polymer. How about
another Apple gadget? Their first item is an [2]iPhone bracelet,
including the functionality of a 'PDA, wireless Internet, a mini iPod,
and, of course, a phone.' Notice the Apple logo in the picture." I'd
settle for ubiquitous unmetered wireless network access.

Legal Issues Don't Bother American Downloaders
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/231248

An anonymous reader writes "Ipsos-Reid has [0]released its latest
research on file trading. Bottom line, the great majority of users do
not believe they are breaking the law. Only 9% feel there is anything
wrong with their actions. With 40 million Americans identified as
active file traders this is indeed stirring information, though not
surprising. Another stat, 73% of US downloaders report that their
motivation for trading was to sample music for later purchase. You can
see the [1]charts and original press release here."

Alternate Reality Games Grab Mindshare
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/2253241

An nonymous reader points to articles [0]at the New York Times and
[1]on the BBC about online games that require a lot more audience
participation and curiosity than conventional games do. "Known as ARGs
or Alternate Reality Games, these immersive experiences mix real world
clues, phone calls, voicemail, email chatter-bots, real people playing
roles in real life and a bevy of bogus and legit websites, to create a
fully rounded gaming experience that bleeds over into everyday life.
With central sites like [2]ARGN, [3]Unfiction, and endless forums and
Yahoo groups, the BBC claims that this is not only a quickly emerging
gaming trend, but that it may also have real-world applications like
group dynamics and problem solving. [4]Chasing the Wish claims to
already have a few thousand people worldwide playing since it opened
for play on Feb. 28. One sure sign of having people's attention is the
fact that it's already spawned a parody site, [5]Chasing the Fish."

MySQL A Threat to Bigwigs?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/2233232

[0]Disoculated writes "[1]Is MySQL a threat to bigwigs? is the question
asked in CNN's technology section. The article notes that [2]MySQL is
running perhaps 20% of the web databases but its revenue is merely
0.02%... yet the company is still making money and putting out an
excellent product. Is this a sign that the database market is in for a
drastic change? Of course, there's no mention of [3]PostgreSQL or
    [4]mSQL, but I guess that's typical."

RMS Turns 50
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/2222254

    [0]gnuhead writes "[1]RMS is turning 50 on the 16th, according to [2]
this post in the [3]FSF India mailing list. Some of the members [4]have
decided to give a birthday gift to RMS by celebrating March 16th to
    April 15th as 'GNU/Linux' month, and having a 'It's GNU/Linux dammit!'
email sig. for this month. Happy birthday RMS!!!"

Teach A Robot To Drive, Win A Million Bucks
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/218228

An [0]Anonymous Reader writes "[1]DARPA has released the details of a
'[2]Grand Challenge,' with a $1 million prize. The challenge is to
build an autonomous vehicle which can 'navigate on its own over a
250-mile desert course in less than 10 hours.' from L.A. to Vegas,
'without external communication or human control.' The contest is to be
conducted in March 2004, and is open to all comers. Can we get at least
one entry to represent slashdot?" We've mentioned [3]this contest [4]a
few times before: any intended entrants out there want to disclose your
    secret plans?

Oil-Cooling 802.11 Infrastructure
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/2023221

[0]gomoX writes "A [1]group of 802.11b fans in Tordera, Spain, are
running a [2]wireless node on the roof of a building, with the idea of
a free wireless network for everyone on the neighbourhood. It´s a
system running linux with a home made can antenna, mounted on a plastic
tool box in the roof. To keep it cool under the sun and protect it from
rain, wind, they have immersed it into vegetable oil (yes, the whole
thing). As oil is non-conductive, everything should run fine. The site
is in Spanish, here is the [3]google translation and the [4]google

Fuel Cells Promised For Next Year
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/1835218

An anonymous reader writes "According to an [0]article in today's New
York Times, fuel cells for portable consumer electronic devices will
start appearing next year. First for laptops, and later for smaller
devices like cellphones. Among the interesting benefits of fuel cells
over batteries is the ability to swap cells without having to power
down the device." The article mentions the [1]Toshiba cells
demonstrated at CeBit, and -- no surprise -- Japan is likely to be the
first market for these tiny fuel cells.

Commander Keen: 13 Years Later
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/1718207

16977 writes "I just noticed that [0]Id Software is now selling
downloadable versions of its classic titles [1]Commander Keen: Invasion
of the Vorticons and [2]Goodbye Galaxy. Although the game is over 10
years old by now, there is still a [3]thriving community of Keen fans
out there whose interest has not waned. We now have [4]level editors
for both Keen Vorticons and Goodbye Galaxy, unofficial Keen [5]fan
software, and of course the infamous [6]Dopefish, which has by now made
cameo appearances in well over a dozen computer games. However, we have
yet to see [7]Commander Keen: The Universe is Toast, the sequel to the
previous Keen game that was planned but never made. With the original
developers pursuing their own independent projects, it doesn't look
like it will happen anytime soon. But in the meantime, die-hard Keen
fans have been getting by, not unlike Farscape fans after their show
    was cancelled."

Fooling NMAP for Whatever Reason
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/165214

more! David Berrueta has written a paper oulining the techniques and
