   Slashdot Headlines

Users Conned by Cable Con
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/19/0310206

[0]RJ Mansfield writes "MSNBC is running a story on [1]users attempting
to con their cable companies being connned. The high-cost filter being
sold on Ebay and through email Spam to bypass Pay-Per-View (PPV)
digital cable systems is a readily available filter that only
temporarily blocks the PPV charges. Users are getting shocked when the
cable company then bills the cable user for all of the ordered PPV."

A Slightly-Softer Microsoft Shared Source License
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/19/0236216

RadBlock writes "Microsoft Watch has a story on a [0]recent change in
Microsoft's shared-source licensing... I guess the main difference is
that programmers do not have to send back any changes made to the
source code. But they can't combine any of the Microsoft code with
other software. Here's the [1]full text of their new license
agreement." The article claims that Microsoft is "inching closer — at
least in spirit — to the GNU GPL" with these license tweaks, but it
doesn't look that way to me.

TRON + Linux = "T-Linux"
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/19/0152202

An anonymous reader writes "The T-Engine Forum and MontaVista Software
[0]announced today that they are collaborating to combine the
long-dominant Japanese embedded operating system, TRON ("The Real-time
Operating system Nucleus"), with embedded Linux, in the hopes of
creating a standardized software architecture for embedded devices that
takes advantage of open source software and the benefits of Linux."

Sandia's Laptop Heatpipes Closer To Market
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/19/0123250

[0]mckennabluedot.com writes "Laptops aren't truly portable until you
can stand to sit with one on your lap for more than 30 minutes.
[1]Sandia National Labs has [2] developed small copper 'wicks' to
transport methanol—and waste heat—from one area of a computer to
another, where it can be dispersed more efficiently, comfortably and
compactly than with heat sinks. The technology is being licensed to an
undisclosed startup." So this stuff ([3]mentioned here previously)
might soon make it to a lap near you.

A New Approach to Teaching Science
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/18/236246

Gallenod writes "The Washington Post has an article on Joy Hakim, an
author [0]trying to re-write junior-high science textbooks to make them
more readable. There are some interesting observations on how
traditional textbook publishing houses control pretty much everything
children read in school and her difficulties in challenging the status
quo. However, she's already succeeded with an award-winning history
textbook series, so maybe she'll rack up another win here."

douglips writes "If you're a hacker of a certain age, chances are you
played M.U.L.E. Salon is running [0]a story on M.U.L.E. creator Dan[i]
Bunten. Ahead of her time, she insisted that games would be most
enjoyable when they involved social interactions rather than just
    flashy single-player action and graphics."

Local Root Hole in Linux Kernels
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/18/199208

xepsilon writes "A local Linux security hole using ptrace has been
discovered that allows a potential attacker to gain root privileges.
Linux 2.2.25 has been released to correct this security hole, along
with a patch for 2.4.20-pre kernels. 2.4.21 ought to contain this fix,
once it is released. 2.5 is not believed to be vulnerable to this
security hole. See [0]this email from Alan Cox for details, and a
    patch."
