An anonymous reader writes "InfoWorld has an article about how a 'U.S.

Technology Buying Slump
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/30/013204

mgcsinc writes "According to this Yahoo article from Reuters, IT buyers
are continuing a [0]trend of cutting costs, favoring utility over
cutting-edge effect. Market researchers are estimating continuing
doldrums in the industry and enterprise businesses see more 'bang for
the buck' from making improvements in software as opposed to investing
in new infrastructure. This is not necessarily awful, however, for
those who hope businesses will start looking toward open source options
    as the cost effective alternatives..."

[1]implications to the open source community and small software

Most Powerful Amateur Rocket in Canada
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/29/2121211

[0]Alex Schmidt writes "A group of Canadian 'amateur' rocketeers
    successfully [1]launched a 16 1/2 foot rocket to a height of about 5500
feet. The rocket is based on the 'Dauphine' a meteorological rocket
from the 1960's. The rocket weighed 300 pounds, stood 16.5 feet high
and 21 inches in diameter. The motors generated 2400lbs of thrust. It
successfully landed after 3 of 4 parachutes properly deployed."

GF FX 5900 Ultra vs. ATi Radeon 9800 Pro
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/29/202218

[0]Mack writes "[1]OCAddiction.com has their [2]GF FX 5900 Ultra vs.
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro article online detailing which card is more
powerful. Running a plethora of benchmarks we were anxious to see which
card outperformed the other. Quite simple really. We take nVidia's top
offering and pair it up against the current top offering from ATi and
let them duke it out till the bitter end. Who will come out on top?
    Let's take a look."

entitled [0]Pure Math, Pure Joy about the beauty and applicability of
pure math as carried out at the [1]Mathematical Sciences Research
Institute. There is an [2]accompanying slideshow of pictures of

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/29/1554201

An anonymous reader writes "Three days ago I accepted Linux [0]into my
life and while I'm not yet a convert, the experience has shaken my
faith in Windows. It's hard to reconcile because for nearly 20 years
I've mostly stayed on the one true Windows path."

US Cell Phone Users Discover SMS Spam
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/29/1542249

[0]The Llama King writes "It's a bigger problem in Europe and
Japan/Asia, but as SMS text messaging or "texting" becomes more popular
in the United States, its users are discovering that spammers like it
too, according to [1]this Houston Chronicle story. Cell phone companies
are trying to stem the spam flood before it starts, worried that users
will turn off their phones, thus denying providers revenue."
