Telstra To Put Linux On Desktop
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/02/0136236

StArSkY writes "The Australian has an article today outlining how
[0]Telstra, Australia's largest Telco, is switching to Linux and open
source on the desktop. Their pilot has been quite successful, and
improved stability has been noticed. On trial are Star Office, Gnome,
Mozilla and Wyse. Spending AUD$1.5 Billion a year on IT, means Telstra
using Open Source is a massive boost to Open Source developers and
support professionals. Not mentioned in the Article is that Telstra
also just Dumped IBM Global Services, and will be running IT in-house
again! Telstra will be hiring Linux-savvy people I think..."

MozillaZine Celebrates 5th Anniversary
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/02/0232233

An anonymous reader writes "[0]MozillaZine, the Mozilla news and
advocacy site, is [1]five years old today. They've got a [2]fifth
anniversary section, containing a [3]message from their founder, a
[4]chronology (which makes a pretty good Mozilla timeline generally),
[5]some trivia (who's bright idea was [6]Music to Code By?!) and an
[7]acknowledgements page. I think it's amazing that a free site like
this has provided such a great service to the open-source community for
    half a decade. Cheers!"

E-mail Newsletters Switching To RSS
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/01/2234228

[0]prostoalex writes "The wide spread of unsolicited e-mails [1]is
leading publishers and site owners towards subscription-based RSS, the
InternetNews.com article says. Chris Pirillo from [2]LockerGnome is
quoted saying that people just do not subscribe to free e-mail
newsletters anymore, making a broad assumption that anyone offering
them would be a spammer. [3]This short article on About.com also argues
for the RSS as preferred format for newsletters, site headlines and all
sorts of updates that were e-mailed to customers before."

Sign Your Name Online With A Mouse
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/01/216254

[0]icke writes "Soon, the way you use your mouse could help prove who
you are. According to a BBC News article, scientists have found a way
for people to [1]sign their name online using a mouse instead of a pen.
The technology, based on the research from Queen Mary College,
University of London by [2]Peter McOwan, 'uses a neural network to pick
out the unique features of the way that someone uses a mouse.'"

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/01/2245222

[0]skreuzer writes "Microsoft has once again [1]shifted the schedule
for the release of "Longhorn," the company's next major version of
Windows. The product was originally expected to ship next year. Then in
May of this year, officials pushed back the release date to 2005. But
now executives are declining to say when they expect the software to
    ship."

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/01/2113219

[0]vinsci writes "According to CNET News, 'The European Parliament has
    [1]delayed voting on a controversial software-patents directive,
following protests and criticism by computer scientists and
economists.' ZDNet UK adds: 'Warnings that a controversial directive
could devastate European software businesses have [2]struck a chord
with MEPs. The European Parliament has delayed voting on a
controversial software-patents directive... the vote, originally
planned for Monday, will now take place at a plenary session starting
on 22 September.' Wired also has [3]a story on the protests."

[0]sinjayde writes "Yahoo!/Reuters is reporting that Toyota has

'Toyota's new hybrid gasoline-electric [2]Prius sedan uses electrically
operated power steering and sensors that help guide the car when
reversing into parking spaces.'" No need to rely on the [3]reverse

Origami Helps Cellphone Cameras To Focus
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/01/1811234

Sea Monkey writes "New Scientist has an article on the development of
[0] novel and ultra-cheap micromotor technology. It's a new type of
linear motor, 'using a technique closer to origami than engineering' to
cut slits out of tiny piezoelectric ceramic parts. One of the
envisioned applications is taking a sheet of the material with the
motors, wrapping it into a tube and moving a lens up and down it -
instant tiny movable focusing element for cellphone camera lenses."

Balloonists Attempt World Altitude Record
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/01/1754240

ACey writes "[0]BBC News is reporting on the [1]latest attempt to break
the balloon altitude world record. [2]Qinetiq 1 is scheduled to launch
tomorrow, 2nd September 2003, from the coast of Cornwall, UK, and aims
to reach 132,000 feet or 25 miles in a flight that could last 12 hours.
The balloon is so big (1,250 feet tall) that it should be visible from
most of the UK, Ireland and Western France as it climbs. Good luck to
    them!"

Mobile Game Applications Need Scripting Too
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/01/151255

An anonymous reader writes "Mobile game developer Tom Park believes
that scripting for wireless devices is important for proficiency sake.
And with the need to scale mobile applications across so many different
platforms, proficiency is everything. [0] Read his thoughts on
scripting, as well as his ideas on wireless application development's
