(for the 2nd time, and including Tigro's response...) Clever idea, but something about dissappearing/reappearing fields bugs me...
One thing I've seen on some web sites is an example of what an entery should look like for fields that may be confusing. (Like, how do you type a phone number? +12345678901, +1 (234) 567-8901, etc.) So for this case, a piece of text (yay, more to translate...) showing something like "Jacob Marley" either directly above or below the login field. This combined with inline (shows what you may be wanting to type ahead of the cursor,) and drop-down (shows a list of matching entries, if more than one,) auto-complete, would be workable. Just be sure to migrate over the stored login from the old settings, and most people won't even notice! Anyone who's used the wiki or JIRA online login is already familiar with how to put in their login in Username+Password style. If the required space is missing when the login button is pressed, generate a popup or other notification that explains the problem. My 12.5 cents, Ricky Cron Stardust --- Tigro's response --- what if the single field was as big as the two fields combined? it wouldn't be a appearing/disapearing field, only the separation between the fields would disapear, they would visually merge into a single one (or int he opposite direction, the single field woudl split into two) ps:did you meant to send this only to me or to the whole list? if for the whole list, feel free to fwd my reply along with your second attempt to send this -- my response -- That could work, the idea of making the fields the same size, but might become a little difficult to maintain over time and across different UI scales. Technically the UI scaling thing should be ok, but I've seen too much breakage in that area to trust it... :P But I think that it would be easier to just add a line showing an example. After all, it's the new user that we are worried about here, not someone who HAS been using the program... Those who already have a settings file should get their login transferred on over automagically, and most likely won't even notice the difference. (Especially if your suggestion is taken, in part, and the new unified field matches the width of both of the distinct fields.)
