I really dislike this idea as well. Unlike skype SL is not something
you want started automatically as you login into your computer.

* The goal of making SL start faster is noble, but saving one click
there isn't going to help much
* I happen to know a lot of people who really like the splash screen
and are in awe of scenes that get rotated there, kudos to those
Lindens who made them!
* The login screen provides useful information, latest blog posts,
grid status, etc.
