External Transactions

I had to interrupt my work on the external transaction concept a while 
ago and won't be able to take it up again before Mai or June. I have 
created a branch (branch from HEAD of course) called 
SLIDE_2_1_EXTERNAL_TX to make my development open to anyone to inspect.

Note, however, this is a very early and rudimentary sketch!
