Hi!

I'm setting up a Content Management and QS System for a large-ish website. Since my
customer would like to edit the site's content herself, a complicated XML/Schema based
editing system has been implemented.

What I'd like to do now is add versioning and QS to the system.

Since the whole thing is a web application running under tomcat anyway, it was natural
to look at slide for these purposes. If possible I would like to use technology like
webDAV and/or slide in order to avoid reimplementing the wheel, so to speak.

The problem I now face is that for both webDAV and slide it is not possible for me to
tell from the documentation whether these tools can or will support the functionality
I require.

Basically I am looking for an abstraction which would allow me to serve one group of
users one logical version of the site's documents, and another group of users another
version. Specifically, I would like the general populace on the internet to see a
certain labelled version of the site, while the local editors of the site see the most
up to date versions of all files, and the QS staff have some means moving the labels
on the files so that they can 'release' the latest versions to the internet.

It seems to me that webDAV would support this type of operation using 'workspaces' and
a 'version selection rule'. In fact, this is exactly what I need, but I could only
find references to it in a 'usage scenario' document. The trouble is that mod_dav does
not seem to support versioning yet, and I can't tell from the docs whether (and if so,
how) this behaviour would be implementable using slide.

Suggestions anyone?
