Did you get something like this in your logs:
http-8080-Processor4, 27-Jun-2005 14:40:26, delbd, GET, 200 "OK", 91 ms, 
/files/test.txt

If you have no mesage coming from slide, that means authentificaiton is stille 
enabled in web.xml i'll say.
