this is what neil davidson wrote about sloanfest for the canadian press, as reproduced in the halifax chronicle-herald monday august 7:
Edgefest 3 was more like 29 little concerts than one big alternative rock festival. It was also an intriguing -- and encouraging -- glance into the future of Canadian rock. Saturday's synopsis was simple: 29 bands in 12 hours. Two stages: the massive Molson Amphitheatre and a cozy second stage backing on Lake Ontario a 10-minute walk away. For the record, Halifax's Sloan was the headliner in what is probably one of its final performances before pursuing solo projects. "I like to think we're closing it off in a classy way," said guitarist Chris Murphy, who doubled as drummer for The Super Friendz on Saturday. Others at the top of the bill included Toronto's 13 Engines, Rusty, and treble charger, Hamilton's Killjoys and Halifax's Thrush Hermit and Jale. Like soccer teams on the road, each of the groups brought their little band of supporters. Not to mention parents, in some cases. It was a made-in-Canada Lollapalooza, with mosh pits both in front of the stage and high above, on the slippery sod of the hills overlooking the stage. It was also rows of multicoloured hair, bobbing heads, empty beer stands and scores of sweaty, happy young teens. Organizers reported sales of 8000, although the crowd seemed much smaller on a humid day that alternated between strong sunshine and spirited downpours. In a stroke of genius, the four-piece band Thrush Hermit played an entire set of Steve Miller classics, from Rockin' Me to Jet Airliner and The Joker. The set may mark the first documented example of Miller-moshing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- _James R.
