this is going to be a sort of catch-all post; i
just want to comment on a few things i took in
over the past week.

last weekend's rebecca west gig was good, but
strange. the band were doing a very fast, full-on
set, but audience response didn't seem to measure
up. there were a *lot* of people but most people
just seemed to stand and stare. it was kind of
weird. it was the release of the vinyl version of
_burners on_, but *nobody* bought a copy! what's
up with that? probably some combination of:
- people in halifax haven't figured out that shows
are the best place to buy music, even after all
this time as an "indie-rock hot spot".
- everyone gave in long ago, and, like me, bought
  the CD.
- nobody has any money. i can vouch for that one
  too.

anyways, state champs *rocked* but to avoid self-
indulgence i will say no more than that. jim and
i enjoyed dusty sorbet too, but what i want to
know is, is "dusty sorbet" a stage name that bob
is using, or is it a name for bob+lukas, or just
whatever lineup bob happens to assemble?

thursday night was the open house for the new
recording studio, "idea of east", helmed by
producer wonderboy laurence currie. laurence has
quite the snazzy setup: 24-track digital,
24-track analog, and effects to go. the studio
proper has a seperate vocalist booth, and the
control room is spacious and has a comfy couch,
which jim and i took advantage of after we got
beers in hand and dropped the new teenage fanclub
on the CD player, blasting it on the monitors. it
was cool to see terry pulliam drop by for a look;
he and laurence sat down together and had a big
chat about the studio and recording and stuff.

today i went to row spring garden to see the
afternoon instore by rebecca west. i don't
remember a more enjoyable gig by them! it's not
just the laidback saturday afternoon that helped
either. i think it's that the gig played to my
two major biases with the band: i prefer
allison's sardonic/witty thing to her pissed-off
pose, and i definitely prefer their recent
material to their older stuff. almost all their
songs were new ones and i liked them all.

jale + chinstraps tonight.
