Based on the discussion of the last day or so, we really need to see
about getting version 1.2 released.

As far as I can tell, all of the issues Rod pointed out are resolved in
CVS HEAD, so that 1.2 should seriously diminish the need for
"super-skilled staff" when setting up Very Large Instances. Some issues
do not disappear; there will still be long running transactions that
cause some inconvenience, which is, to a great degree, an unavoidable
problem. But we can certainly get rid of a bunch of the "misfeature" cases.

Referring back to our checklist...

This is a major release, so we *NEED*, quite badly, positive build
reports for supported platforms. We'll probably get a great deal of
milage out of having some combination of the following:

- Red Hat Linux/IA-32, via Devrim's RPM building
- I do much of the development on Debian/IA-32, and we run, in
production, on AIX 5.3
- Jan builds and tests on FreeBSD
- 'Twould be good if Dave Page and others can run on some Windows platforms

and
- PostgreSQL 7.4
- 8.0
- 8.1
- Hopefully some version of CVS HEAD...
- NOT 7.3; it is no longer supported

It seems to me that it would be good to get some
build/compile/run-at-least-something reports from CVS HEAD, so we know
that we don't have anything that's stupidly broken for any of the
platforms. In the absence of any such reports, I suppose we should tag
up a 1.2 pre-candidate and have that available either Friday or Monday.

>From there, we should start on release candidates.
