The only difference I would imagine from running nodes locally would be latency and bandwidth of the network. Latency won't be much of a problem, but bandwidth may be. If you push more changes to your origin then you can transfer over the network (via the VPN) over the same time period you'll keep falling behind on your replication.
But in terms of configuration, you should not have anything different just because of the VPN.
