I forgot to mention another important deciding factor (whether we should
register under LUGS or as an independent org):

  Registration as a society costs $400 *"Pay And Pay"*

It's one of those "I don't understand Singapore" things; it costs 80 times
more to register a non-profit organization than to register a business!
