Okay...
After another recompile of the same kernel version (just for fun),
eth0 is initializing correctly! I don't think I did anything
different at all...
The only trouble is that it hangs on "Finding module dependencies",
but you can ctrl-c that, and I'm told it doesn't happen on newer
kernels.
I'm still interested in finding a FAQ on what goes on in the boot
directory though...
