Firstly binary modules are version specific so you probably can't use
a 2.2.5 tulip.o with a 2.2.12 kernel.
Ironically the 2.2.5 kernel may have a more recent version of the driver
than a recent kernel source. Apparently Donald Becker has raised Linus'
ire by not releasing drivers in a timely fashion, resulting in old
versions in kernel sources. Get the latest version from Becker's NASA
site, just like your distro probably did.
