Not sure about grabbing an XF86Setup shot, but for xdm, modify the script that
xdm runs before showing the login prompt (Xsetup). Insert a line at the end
that runs your favourite screen grabbing program (ImageMagick's import is
quite good, as has been suggested in another post). You may wish to preface
grabbing the screen with a 'sleep' command of some length, just to let things
settle down (if you have animated things on the screen or whatever). You can
even get cute and fork a background shell which sleeps and then runs the
screen capture program, so that you can get a shot of yourself entering your
username or whatever.
