I had a simliar experience...... when I tried the 2.2.14 kernel.
It was complaining about a PAM function. (It appears very quickly, then is
erased by the next Login prompt).
Do you have another kernel on that machine you can back-grade /boot to?
(Assumption being this is close your your issue).
