It is indeed used by Orbit. It's called a "name server" because the various
distributed objects that are available at any point register their names and
some other information with it (to enable ORBit to find them and start them
up). It might have made sense to call it something else in the first place,
but "name server" is the phrase used throughout a lot of distributed
objects/computing documents that I have seen, so it's probably natural if you
are in that field.
I'm not sure if it can safely nuked, but my guess is that some applications
will start complaining (gnumeric is one that comes to mind). However, I am not
a Gnome-groupie, so I'm not 100% sure of this. Feel like experimenting, Terry
