Yes, XFS is very good for serving up video etc., but SGI has not moved
very quickly with the release of it on Linux. They made a ann. but the
follow up has been quite poor. They in fact have been much quicker on
the kernel and OpenGL front. They just made an ann. saying that it is
50% near completion.
Veritas is expensive. I am not sure if their Linux product is free
The JFS/LVM combination on AIX is rock solid and full of features. I
could move paging volumes with users on, move filesystems to the
centre of the disk or to the extremes, increase filesystems etc. etc.
all without rebooting the m/c.
IBM recently has a very good record of completing their Open
Source/Linux projects to production and with good quality. For eg. IBM
JDK, Jikes, Linux/390, DB2, VAJ, WebSphere & MQSeries. All of these
have been top quality ports to Linux.
I am also impressed that IBM overcame the legendary bureaucracy to
finish development on JFS in true open source style with an open CVS
repository for people to look and comment.
If they keep up the same record with JFS, it is going to rock.
