Just some ideas to try out... really would like more information though...
Linux is a very "open" os and can give you lots of information.
what sort of modem are you using (internal or external)? Try to gather
more information as to what is happening - some things to do are:
After you try to connect check your /var/log/messages file to see what is
happening (tail /var/log/mesages -n 30 will give you the last 30 lines -
do this a root).
If you connect, run ifconfig, this should show you what interfaces are
up. Also route -n to for your routing table.
send the information.
Some suggestions to try.......
If you have an external modem, what port is it on?
If you use netcfg:
select /dev/ttyS0 as the modem port if it is on com 1 and /dev/ttyS1 for
com 2....try not to use /dev/modem. Your isp is most probably using pap so
check the pap box, go to the pap page, and enter the user name / secret.
Go to the Networking tab and check "Set default route when making
connection"
You will also have to point to a nameserver. edit /etc/resolv.conf
and enter the line: nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
where the xxx is the ip of your isp nameserver.
I would highly recommend setting up your own nameserver (and proxyserver),
but let's get you online first.......
If your modem is an internal pci modem....... it is most probably a
"winmodem" and they don't work properly yet.
