A little anecdote from me, a helluva happy Linux user.
My video card crapped out on my dual boot Linux/EvilEmpire
box.
I grabbed a different style of card from another box. In the
process, I had to reset the BIOS, move a few disk drives around,
and decided to install a new CDROM drive.
I chose to do the Evil side of things first. After farting
around for four hours, the Evil side still ain't up to scratch.
After an endless cycle of reboot, auto-hardware detect, reboot,
gimme an install disk for this, for that, reboot, etc.etc, I gave
up and tried the Linux side.
All I had to do there was change a mount from /dev/hdc1 to
/dev/hdd1 and it was flying. And the video is 100% improved.
I was up & running and on the 'Net within minutes :)
Linux, ya gotta love it.

P.S. I might one day finish of the Evil side of the box,
but I so rarely use it now, it'll prolly be fine in VGA
mode without a LAN connection or sound support ;P
