IBM Bolsters Growth of Linux e-business Applications for Small Businesses
Free Developer Kit Offers Industry-Leading Software from IBM and Lotus
IBM today announced a new program to help lower development costs
and bolster the supply of new e-business applications for Linux servicing
the small business market.
The program, which consists of a free, not-for-resale application developer
kit, support and marketing incentives for developing e-business
applications,
aims to help application developers targeting small business get a foothold
of the rapidly growing Linux market. According to IDC, the Linux operating
environment worldwide is expected to achieve a 25 per cent compound
annual growth rate through to 2003.
Distributed by IBM and Caldera Systems, each application developer kit
includes:
- IBM DB2 Universal Database for Linux - a relational database for managing
information
- IBM WebSphere Application Server for Linux - a Web application server for
tasks such as Web publishing
- IBM Developer Kit for Linux, Java Technology Edition - IBM's Java
technology
- IBM VisualAge for Java for Linux - Java tools for application development
- Lotus Domino for Linux - email, messaging and collaboration capabilities.
"The Linux application developer kit is a tremendous opportunity for small
business application developers to take advantage of the rising popularity
of Linux and bring their products to the market quickly, easily and
cost-effectively," said Jack Verdins, marketing manager, Business
Integration & Transformation software, IBM Australia and New Zealand.
"IBM is committed to supporting open standard platforms like Linux, which
is increasingly seen by the business community as a serious alternative to
Windows operating platforms. We are excited to be a part of the growth of
Linux by bolstering the supply of new e-business applications for this
operating system," said Mr Verdins.
Caldera Systems will offer the free developer kit with versions of its
OpenLinux
operating system to independent software vendors during a 120-day pilot
development program.
Developers of applications for any sized business can also register for the
free
kit via IBM and Caldera Web sites at http://www.ibm.com/linux and
http://www.calderasystems.com
The kit available from the IBM Web site is supported on both Caldera
OpenLinux and Red Hat Linux operating systems. IBM intends to offer
similar
programs through other Linux distributors during 2000.
Qualified applications developed or ported to Linux during the pilot
program
will be featured on selected high-traffic IBM Web sites. These include:
- the IBM Linux home page (http://www.ibm.com/linux),
- the IBM developerWorks home page (http://www.ibm.com/developerworks), a
free online resource for tools, code, tips, news, tutorials and other
information for developers
- the IBM Global Solutions Directory home page (
http://www.software.ibm.com/solutions/isv),
an online catalogue of applications, tools and services developed using IBM
technologies.
The qualify for these promotions, applications must use at least two IBM
software technologies - DB2 Universal Database, Lotus Domino, WebSphere
Application Server or IBM's Java technology - as their application
infrastructures.
The best applications will also be eligible to be showcased in IBM booths
at major
Linux conferences and trade shows in 2000.
