I have CUPS installed at home. You can't even support a non-PS printer under CUPS without buying a filter from Easy Software, or writing your own filter that uses Ghostscript (I wrote a shell script to do this for my LJ3P). So the issue of extra quality settings is not addressed per se by CUPS.
