Basic assumptions (generalisations) that will get you through:

Consumer PCI modems are all WinModems (blurgh!).

Consumer external modems all work with Linux (unless you have
freaky serial port problems like I did - that's a whole different
story).


Yeah, it is a bit of a generalisation, but they pretty much apply
whenever you go into your average computer shop.
