Hello Sluggers

Been looking at icecast (audio server), etc and trying to get it
going, but the first stage is not that clear.

What does the input programe (shout, etc) actually send to the server?
That is what does it need to send something to the server.

Is it 'playing a CD and streaming that?
Do I have to rip/convert my CD tracks into files and feed it a list of
files to stream?

Is mpeg the format? One of the progs mention converting the file to a
wave, then sending that at the specified rate?

Initially I'm just looking at playing across my network.
