Sure, just use the -M or --multi-volume option on tar. However I
personally prefer to do this:
split -b 1420k linux-2.3.51.tar.gz
for i in xa?
do
echo -n $i
read a
mcopy $i a:
done
and then at the other end:
for i in xa{a,b,c,d,e,f...}
do
echo -n $i 1>&2
read a
mtype a:$i
done | tar zxvf -
