Jeff Waugh comments on his expo experiences and then asks:

Firstly, sorry about the short notice. We would have had even more
panelists and audience if things had worked out better.
We only knew we had the room for sure by Wednesday afternoon.
It was indeed a "cool" event. We ended up with (I think) 15 panelists
and about 150 people in the audience.
The great bulk of the audience were SLUG people, or at least people
who have much more than a passing interest in Linux, so it had a very
different feel from the people on the expo floor.
Because of the great diversity of people on the panel, most questions
were general, sometimes straying to a political nature (not too much).
Some highlights:
- Rasmus from php3 describing coding after work till 4AM for eighteen
months
- Tridge responding to a question about whether being paid to hack on
Linux will make a difference. Answer: no, people are simply being paid
to do what they always did, any attempt to change that will see them
walk away.
- Richard Piper asked about (ICA?) the protocol used by Citrix. Tridge
felt it wouldn't be hard to hack. He then described how they reverse
engineered another MS encrypted protocol. Set the locale to France
where encryption is not allowed and voila, the protocol is en clar.
There were many, many other tidbits, nuances, that are impossible
to summarise.
What made me so proud to be a SLUGGER is
- we turned up in large enough numbers to show we care
- we were polite, asked fabulous questions and showed our appreciation
A number of panelists mentioned to Grahame how much they appreciated the
session.
I should also mention that the room cost $500. We were prepared to wear
that, but Linuxcare stepped in and put the money up.
One final thing, Grahame Kelly has thanked a lot of people who
deserve thanking. However, Grahame really did 90% of the leg work for the
show and the tech session. He realy deserves huge thanks and credit.
