Subject: [SLUG] XFree86 release 3.3.6
Hello there,
I've just signed up. I have my CDs of Linux and I'm raring to go but
unfortunately I dont have the X server I need to run my graphics card. It
uses a S3 Trio 3D/2X chipset, which is apparently fine with versions 3.3.5
and up but I must have something lower than that. VGA16 is the only one that
comes close to working and it doesn't cut it.
So I have researched. A month ago I didn't know what a motherboard was. I've
found out about all the relevant sites so I figure I'd surf on over and pick
up the files I need under Windows. My new pc has Windows 98 installed but is
missing a few crucial things like.. installation of the COM port. It refuses
to run my modem. I didn't want Windows, I didnt pay for it. The guy only has
HDD with Windows preinstalled. So here I am running MIE5 (& not enjoying it)
on a Pentium 100 w/ 16MB ram trying to download linux files which I plan to
transport to the new PC by connecting the old HDD up to the new computer..
And to top it all off my access to the FTP sites seems to die wherever I get
close to a file I need. I've got readmes and that's it. I've even got an
ftpmail in US trying to get a file for me but it's not working either. So I
thought hey why not buy another distribution? SuSE 6.3 has v3.3.5 that's
close enough. But no, EverythingLinux has run out! And there's gonna be SuSE
6.4 in 4 weeks. I've had my new computer for 4 weeks. I've assembled it,
pulled it apart, harvested bits from and then restored them back to my old
PC. I dont wanna wait another month. And I dont wanna buy redundant
software.
I wanna run Linux but I'm starting to think I'm cursed. I can't even get
thru to ftp://x.physics.usyd.edu.au/pub/XFree86/. Could any of you help out?
Could the owner of this site maybe burn me a copy of the software? Could I
hook up my HDD to somebody's system and copy it across?
Frustrated,
Daniel
PS. Everything else is fine, now. Sorry if this is too long. I have a
tendency to ramble.....
BTW Corel Linux & TurboLinux suck!
