Hi There. This was the only list I could think of to ask. Where would you start looking for comparisons between laser printers? I am going to buy a laser but don't have much to choose on other than features and brand name. And there are lots of printers at about the price range I am looking all with almost identical features. My favoured options at the moment are a Brother HL-1240, a Kyocera FS-680 or an HP 1100. Brother: because it is 12ppm and only ~ $600 Kyocera: because it has the "unique cartridge free ECOSYS technology". The toner is only ~ $90 and does 3600 pages. I can't find a good description of Ecosys anywhere - any ideas as to what it is? I assume just that it uses less toner. HP: because it is an HP. Any personal anecdotes or suggestions would be welcome. Also any standard place that you go to to find product comparisons.. If I subscribed to APC I'd probably just look up a back issue of that for printer comparisons but unfortunately I don't have any.. A side question: why would I want a printer with PostScript other than being able to print natively without filters? Although the idea of a PostScript printer sends shivers of excitement down my spine, I can't see any real practical reaons. Better print quality? More features? What? (I've always felted a little small when it comes to printers because every printing document I've read seems to say Real People Have PostScript Printers. But all I've ever had is a Canon BubbleBlower.) Also, are there any issues with using these printers in Linux as opposed to Winblows? That is, one printer I was looking at, the Canon LBP-800, has only 512k buffer RAM, and claims to use your system memory for buffering. Firstly I assume there'd be no Linux driver to do this for you. Secondly sounds like borrowing some of the bad bits of WinPrinters to me. Have you experienced many driver/compatibility problems using lasers on Linux? Or printers in general if you feel like it.
