I've installed RedHat 6.0 (now upgraded to 6.1) on a Dell Inspiron 3500. I'm not
exactly sure what the differences are anymore, but I'll try to give you some hints....
I'm not sure how familiar you are with Linux, so please don't get offended if I give
really basic suggestions.... = )

(I'm not a member, so I don't think I can post on the list...)

Here are my specs to see if you can use my suggestions at all:

Graphics card: Neomagic Magicmeadia 256AV
Monitor: 14.1" TFT XGA 1024 x 768

if you have this graphics card (or a similar one) there should be a an XFree86 Server
for it and you should have that installed. If you can get into GnoRPM (Gnome RedHat
Package Manager) then you can look under X11, XFree86, Servers and check if you have
the right package installed (there might be some other way of checking).

if you do, then try running Xconfigurator again. Check the highest resolution that
your screen can go to in case is isn't 1024 x 768 (should be in the back of the
Reference and Trouble shooting guide). Also, put the highest resolutions first as it
will default to the first one. CTRL+ALT"+" doesn't work on my Inspiron either, so the
computer can only use the first resolution you
put into the file - I think it's because the key pad is mapped in a different way
(even if you put on numlock it still doesn't work). Type in "543" or something like
that in Xconfigurator.

Don't despair! it took me ages just to get my laptop into 1024 x 768. It was my
first Linux installation, and apparently it's one of the most difficult things to do
with Linux! sound is actually remarkably easy...

You can mail me if you want to ask anything else. I hope it's been helpful!
