Terry, I *think* you can find guides at http://www.latex-project.org/ I convert Word/WP documents by saving as RTF files then using rtf2latex. The resulting latex files are pretty good, but depend a lot on how careful the author of the .doc file was in using good structuring habits. LaTeX is terrific if you use a lot of bibliographic stuff. Use it with Emacs and Reftex for a first class aid in cross-referencing, accessing a .bib database and navigating large multi-file documents. Goes without saying that it's good for maths formulae.
