Simon, files in the /proc file system are not real files stored on a disk
somewhere, they are magic files managed by the kernel. You really
shouldn't be opening them with an editor - they don't support random
access. Have a look at them using 'cat /proc/...../file' and store data
into them (most won't allow you to) using 'echo 1 > /proc/...../file'.
