We actually have a "Virtual" modem running for our training sessions..
It's a thing called "modemu" which we put on a ttyp like /dev/ttyp0
It then takes modems commands (say with kppp or whatever..)
You give an IP address as the phone number.. ie
ATDT192.168.1.1
And it then telnets to that IP address.. as if it were dialling up..
Pretty neat...
