Hello,

        Thanks folks for all your input. I played with
        xdpyinfo, xwininfo and read the man pages for
        startx etc etc.

        So the colour depth is set with the DefaultColorDepth
        in the /etc/X*config file and it works like a
        charm.

        Oh ... I had not realised that slackware 7.0 CD actually
        had gnome stuff .... I installed it, swapped from xdm to
        gdm ... wow!! ... was I impressed with enlightenment. 
        (and all in 24bit colour ...) :-)
        [I used to use fvwm & olvwm ...]

        Thanks once again to you all. I certainly have enjoyed
        playing with Linux thus far ... always has some excitement
        in store ... and I hope my next task of getting
        internet going and setting linux as a web proxy will
        be as interesting.
