I have been thinking along these lines because I've been following some threads on packet radio. Phil Karn has software and papers (http://people.qualcomm.com/karn) talking about Viterbi error correction running at megabytes per second. With the caveat that this would not be good in a server, and may require RT Linux extensions, then it is obviously possible to run the 'modem' part in software. Anecdotal evidence from Winmodems seems to confirm this. For didactic and research purposes this would also be enormously interesting. The standards processes have been great for interoperability, but the closed nature of the hardware and software have stifled innovation. In the modem world, the ability to do time sensitive data transfer (for sound and game data) isn't widespread. In addition, such ideas as being able to dial a central shared number (like time, weather, TAB etc.) and latch onto streamed data (e.g. music, news) isn't possible with the fixed code in modems today. The vast world of signal processing is not widely known or understood by many in the software / protocol level. It is fascinating, and I believe there is much yet to be discovered.
