I have compiled code (including for Linux), and I have no problem with
distributing apps in
source form, hell its also quite useful. But when I have the opportunity to take the
lasy way out
and get binaries, I jump at it. I'm not going to need the QT development tools just
lying around on
my HDD, because I'm not really a developer.
So we have binaries, with deceptively straightforward instructions. You download
and install
the binaries, and download and install the libraries. It doesn't work.
Now I ask you....
If the binaries are distributed in RPM format....
And So are the required libraries...
And the directions for installing them are followed (to the letter)....
And then it fails.....
And then the solution is to compile your own.....
why on gods green earth did you post the RPMS containing the binaries?
Now don't get me wrong, I love LICQ (now that it runs), and It works well. But I
wish
programmers wouldn't post Binaries when they don't always work the way they say they
do, it just
doesn't do them justice.
My problem was a mismatch of compiled LICQ binaries with qt libraries even though
they passed
the dependancy tests.When the exact libraries aren't even available (see if you can
find qtbeta3
lying around), it just makes the whole hit-and-miss afair that more complicated.
I'd shoot a VB developer(I use the term loosely :) ) if he gave me a beta app and told
me that
it worked for VBRUN= > 4 and it died on version 5. It's just misleading.

Mutual understanding for those who read the source code, bugger the rest of you.
Shouldn't Linux be more than a collective pet project for the learned elitists?
That's like
a bunch of inventors getting together to create a machine that does nothing. If Linux
isn't the best thing since sliced bread, why do you peddle Linux to aeronautical,
military
or emergency services as viable alternatives? I'm sure they deserve more than what you
think
Linux should be. .

As an Engineer, you have certain expectations, one of which is to be truthful and
straight
forward. If something might work, fine , don't say that it does.
