Try ssh as an alternative to telnet. See <http://www.ssh.org/> for general info. Under Windows I use TeraermPro with ssh extension <http://www.zip.com.au/~roca/ttssh.html> Once it is setup it is mostly transparent to users. It is essentail when there is lots of machines on the local-network. Biggest password sniffing happens not through telnet but through POP, so you might want to consider at least APOP or other more secure alternatives.
