I read with bemusement Dominique Jackson's article on a second 'flaw' in RedHat Linux [The Australian, Tues May 2 2000]. This 'flaw' has not been demonstrated to exist, not by the perpetrator of the misinformation handed to Ms Jackson, nor by the Linux kernel development team (who have pleaded with Mr Todd for more details) and not by RedHat itself. Neither has Mr Todd been able or willing to demonstrate or indicate to the mailings lists mentioned in the article which "nine of 17 sites" he has already hacked into to exploit this mythical bug. I advise Ms Jackson to indulge in a simple check next time she reports supposed bugs, which are of great concern to the Linux community in particular, and of greater importance to the marketplace in general when making a platform choice. She is referred to the CERT advisories web site where such bugs are listed and fixes posted. As they stand, Mr Todd's claims are so much hot air, with the potential to turn thousands of less-informed neophytes away from what is a actually a suberbly crafted and very stable computing platform that is enjoying geometric growth in the marketplace.
