I remember watching with amusement one late night I was working upgrading a
UNIX Server.  Buzzing around this site were perhaps half a dozen "Windows"
experts trying to get a Citrix installation up and running.

I liken it to astrophysics, where the strategy was to try something, watch
the outcome, and then try and divine what was going on in the middle (like
watching light bend around a black hole)

All this because nobody really understood what was going on inside the
operating systems (and of course it is not documented)

The training these guys get is more along the lines of "this is how you
drive the GUI" not "this is how it works, and you use this to change it"
