You have a hardware VPN in place already?
If so that may limit you to using IPsec. Basically under Linux you have a
number of options for VPNs: IPsec, ppp over ssh, cipe, tunnelv, vtun, etc.
There are at least 4 IPSec implementation under Linux -- a good list is
at OpenSec <URL: http://www.opensec.net/tunnel.html> -- I've only used
FreeSWAN though. Moreton Bay <URL: http://www.moretonbay.com/vpn/pptp.html>

Distributions differences aside most of the IPSec solutions require
patches to the kernel. If at possible keep your life simple and choose
the same kernel revision and IPSec implementation at all ends.
You may also find it useful to turn off your firewall's rules to test
things too btw.
