okay, Jamie said this is the place to ask about this sorta stuff, so....
I have a permanently-connected machine sitting on the network at my
local uni where I studied and currently teach. It serves my personal
email, and has my own website (yes it is useful - I keep lots of useful
docs on there, among other things) and a few other bits and pieces.
It's quickly over-staying it's welcome. I need a new home for it.
Zeta is not an option anymore (Pacific should die. really.). Cable is
not an option for me because i can't get either from where I live (as if
it was an option for a server anyway, grrr.). Jamie suggested using
bigpond direct. I understand it's $20 a month if you stay under 20Mb
per month incoming.
Okay, now here are my questions:
how do they count incoming traffic, exactly? raw data? tcp data? ip
data? This could make a big difference.
Has anyone tried this? how much trouble do you have keeping the incoming
traffic down? what's a typical incoming traffic figure for a lightly
used server that does no downloading?
If I get ISDN, say, what will it cost? the web site says $1000 for
installation but does that cover everything? What if I want dual ISDN?
Are there any other options I should consider? Are there any other
places that do telehousing that compares to the former glory of Zeta?
