I recall a Gartner Group report on the "Real Cost of the Desktop", published back in 1995 (?) It showed quite clearly that a PC with its Win 3.1 software cost more than a similarly configured Macintosh when all things were considered for a period of one year. And yet popular opinion at the time would have you believe that Windows was the cheaper platform to run.
