Sounds like a thin client with a disk on chip might be worth looking into. http://www.igelusa.com, it runs on linux, but the flash driver isn't GPL, and its compressed, so its slower than a hard disk. The place where I work is getting quite a few of these linux thin clients, I don't know where from, they're selling them to us at around $500 (no tax) for the 16 (or 8?) meg disk on chip version and you can customise what software you want installed. Theres also an 80 meg version with netscape and star office. It has 10/100 nic, two com ports, printer port, USB port, sound card, Smartcard port, SMB, PPP, etc. They're going to used as citrix clients to run windows apps.
